About Me
Hey, I’m Susan. Pull up a chair – I’m so glad you’re here. I’m a dreamer, a Jesus lover, and someone who has walked through enough hard things to know that God doesn’t waste any of it. I’ve been the strong one. The one who kept showing up, held it together, and quietly wondered if there was more to faith than just enduring.
Spoiler: there is so much more!
Flannels & Pearls is the place I built for women like me – women who are ready to go deeper in the Word, to actually abide instead of just survive, and to find the kind of community where you don’t have to have it all together to belong.
I lead retreats, write about the hard and holy things, and show up for women who are ready to stop white-knuckling their faith and start actually living it. You’ll also find me in the kitchen – sharing recipes and gathering people around the table is just part of how I love to love!
I believe God meets us in the middle of our real stories. Not when we’ve cleaned them up. Right in the middle.
So wherever you are in yours – welcome. You’re in the right place.
Let's Gather Together
Let’s Gather Together is all about hardy, wholesome recipes for autumn and winter seasons. This e-cookbook – now in its Second Edition – is 81 pages of my favorite autumn soups, breads and desserts that are sure to become a staple at your dinner table.

Chipotle Bacon Corn Dip
Chipotle bacon corn dip is by far, the BEST dip I’ve ever had. And I’m a pretty hard core chips and dip girl. I have tried several versions of corn dip, trying to find JUST the right one. After perusing many of the hundreds, if not thousands of recipes online – there’s a reason why

3 Hour Buns
Waking up to the smell of freshly baked buns was the best alarm clock ever. And it was my alarm clock a few times a month when I was a child. My mom would start her bun dough the afternoon before, shape it into buns in the evening (with me right by her side), let

Crockpot Potatoes
Every New Year’s Day, my Bartz family gets together to celebrate food and family. I love them, but let’s be honest…because it involves strudel, I’d go even if they weren’t my family. Now, this isn’t a strudel recipe, but it is mashed potatoes done right. Which really just means…they’re super yummy. Since we moved back

Knoephla Hotdish
When I would come home from college during my freshmen year, I tried to visit my Great Grandma Filler in the nursing home as often as I could. That woman. Describing her as amazing isn’t doing her justice. Sometimes, she would talk about when she was a little girl (she could tell me about the

Knoephla Soup
I wish I could introduce this knoephla soup recipe with a sentimental story about one of my German grandmas (you’ll hear me chat about them quite a bit here…they are my heroes), because I think it deserves that! Sadly, I have no memories of my grandmas making this soup. I know they did, I have

Caramel Rolls
have a feeling…I suspect this post may very well be my most popular. I think we all know why. Funny thing about caramel rolls – not many people in the US even know they exist. Just like, I wasn’t aware there were sweet rolls until I was in high school. As far as I know,
